Our Story

Born from struggle. Built on love. Driven by purpose.

Greater Purpose Charity was founded by Irene Apolot Akot, a passionate Ugandan mother whose own childhood struggles inspired her to make a difference in the lives of others.

A Childhood Shaped by Loss

At just six years old, Irene lost her father. Raised by her mother — a devoted teacher supporting four children on her own — she experienced firsthand the pain of poverty, the fear of losing opportunities, and the daily struggle of survival. Her mother worked tirelessly, often taking loans and selling their food reserves just to keep her children in school.

Education Against the Odds

Through faith, determination, and the strength of her mother’s love, Irene and her siblings completed their education. Irene graduated as an Orthopaedic Officer from the Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Management Sciences, Mulago. But the journey left her with deep questions that would shape the rest of her life.

"What happens to children who have no parents at all? What happens to mothers with no job, no skills, and no one to turn to?"
— Irene Apolot Akot

The Birth of Greater Purpose Charity

Those questions became the foundation of Greater Purpose Charity — an organization built on compassion, hope, and empowerment. What began as one woman’s determination to ensure no mother or child faces life alone has grown into a movement serving communities across Kampala and western Uganda.

Today, GPC operates through four interconnected pillars: education and child sponsorship, skills training for single mothers, food and health support, and community empowerment initiatives. Every program is designed not just to provide immediate relief, but to build lasting independence.

Our Values

Compassion

Every decision we make starts with empathy. We see the person, not the problem.

Dignity

We empower, not pity. Every mother and child we serve is treated with the respect they deserve.

Sustainability

We build systems, not dependencies. Our goal is communities that thrive long after our intervention.

Transparency

Every donor knows exactly where their money goes. We publish our impact openly and honestly.

Community

We work with communities, not for them. Local ownership drives everything we do.

Hope

We believe in what is possible. Every child we sponsor, every mother we train, is proof that change is real.
